Tips for Jammers
There are lot of etiquette rules that can help a jam work better. Here are three tips to get you started.
A jam is a great place to develop ear training. Listen for the chord changes. There is a lot of information happening at the same time. Learn to focus your listening on the bass player and your jam will have better timing.
If you are not sure of the key, or didn't hear the song announced, ask your jam neighbor. Ask the person leading the jam. Don't be shy. A good jam will take the time to make sure everyone knows the name of the song and the key.
Got lost? Don't panic. Listen for the chord change back to the One chord. Or watch the guitar players fingers. Or ask your jam neighbor. Sometimes songs can get away from us a little bit and you just have to hang on until the end. Make notes of which songs gave you trouble and work on them at home. Everyone gets lost sometime. Maybe you'll be the person helping your neighbor.
